Could someone kindly confirm if both the XDAB cables on the Nion can be safely connected/disconnected while the Nion is operating - OR will this result is any errors or worse - damage to the unit.

The cables are hot swappable.  You cannot damage the unit by plugging and unplugging them while it is running.  However, audio is often interrupted when doing this.  It is also possible a pop will be emitted out of one or more channels.  Because of this, you should be careful about amp volume when patching cables.  Once the cables are correctly connected, proper operation will be restored.
